How to set up a Craft Sale

General preparations

Plan the date and location. Pick a day and time, when people won’t be busy or away. You may also schedule your Craft sale fundraising by another event such as a monthly market, school/church function or town celebrations, so the potential of visitors is more likely. Let us in Kids Action for Kids know by email mail@kidsactionforkids.org about your event.

Engage others. Ask your friends to join making crafts together, donating their time behind the sales table and by promoting the event to their networks at home, school, work, activities and so on. Ask your local businesses if they would like to donate some materials, items or match or double your earnings for your good cause. It is appealing to have home-made and hand-made crafts in your sale, but also mixing them with donated items from local shops can bring more variety and choices to your table.

Advertise. Make posters and flyers, promote your event any way you can by utilizing email, Facebook, Twitter, chat groups, your local newspapers and even radio and tv. We encourage you to use Kids Action for Kids materials to help you advertise in advance, decorate your event and get your core message through about the event being for charity purposes, how the proceeds will be used.

Crafts sale preparations

Plan the scale and season. Assess what kind of a crafts sale you are going to have. With crafts, seasons are great themes to get people excited. Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Valentine’s Day just to mention the most popular examples are a wonderful inspiration to a Crafts sale. Setting up a table in front your house may require less treats than going to a community event, where there is naturally more traffic. Taking pre-orders is another good alternative that works well with crafts and helps you estimate amounts in advance. You can also make your craft sale an active happening with a live craft workshop, bake sale, a special visitor (e.g. Santa Claus), facilitating games and lotteries, playing music and so on.

Assess your own capacity, time and resources: if you are more people contributing, then it is easier to go bigger. You must start early, as planning, gathering materials and the making itself take time. You can also engage friends and all those who like doing crafts. You’ll be surprised, how many actually do!

Plan your selection. Our crafts people have primarily gotten their inspiration from festive seasons, and from there they have planned the colour palette i.e. Christmas / Winter Wonderland brings all reds, whites,  greens and any wood and ginger bread colours together, when Easter has been mostly represented by yellow, orange, purple, green and white. They have noticed that people like to buy items that stand out either because of their appealing design or colours. So, think carefully what you choose to sell – people are nowadays very conscious consumers who appreciate little waste, long durability and recycling opportunities. Little ones love anything soft or bright, and things they can touch. When planning on crafting with the little ones, consider easy-to-make options e.g. gluing, sticking and safe cutting.

Craft. Get your crafting materials ready and start crafting early enough. Inviting people to a Craft workshop or just gathering to craft together is a nice way of getting items done, helping each other and enjoying the company. Store the items according to requirements, and reserve some as samples for viewing.

Selling preparations

Package and display in style. Pretty craft sales table looks inviting, and some items packed in clear cellophane wrap with ribbons and thank you notes can make them nice presents. Hang up Kids Action for Kids posters and place brochures, book marks and business cards next to a donation jar. Your craft sales table will look professional and amazing. For easy transportation, collect paper bags in advance to give away.

Think about prices. It is better to have a variety of prices and numbers that are quick to count together. In your country the prices may depend on the numbers on notes and coins, which makes the need for odd change less accurate. Try not to sell too cheap, but also not too expensive. Value your time, too. Place price tags directly on your items or prepare signs next to them.

Start your crafts sale. On the day, make sure you and your table are all set before the sale starts. Hang up some signs that help visitors find to you and your craft sale.
